What You Can Do for Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. In order to protect our earth and reduce global warming from climate change we must all do our part. Our reliance on energy produced by fossil fuels is causing greenhouse gases like CO2 in our atmosphere to trap the sun’s heat and warm our planet. Small changes in our daily lives can make a difference. Did you know that there is even an environmental cost of fashion? According to a recent article on WBUR public radio, “about 60% of synthetic fabrics are made of fossil fuels and 85% of that material will end up in landfills, where it won’t decay and decompose … even extending the life of our garments by an extra nine months of active use would reduce the carbon, water and waste footprint by around 20% to 30% each.”

What can we do:

  • Learn your carbon footprint
  • Change to energy efficient light bulbs
  • Upgrade to energy efficient appliances
  • Do the 3 R’s into your home: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Conserve water
  • Install solar panels on your roof
  • Plant a tree
  • Do a cleanup in your neighborhood
  • Take public transportation
  • Host a clothing swap
  • Donate gently used shoes to Soles4Souls https://www.soles4souls.org/#getinvolved
